Carer FAQs

You may have many questions when considering a new career as a Carer, or if you are thinking of moving from another Carer role to joining us at emerald homecare. Below are some common questions and answers:

A home carer is a non-medical professional who assists vulnerable individuals directly within their own home with the activities of daily living such as light housekeeping, light meal preparation, personal care, companionship and prompting medication. Working as a Carer for emerald homecare involves traveling to client homes within a set area of South Dublin.

While professional care experience is a plus, it isn’t essential. Whether you’ve cared for a loved one or are entirely new to the industry, what matters most is your personality, attitude, and dedication to helping others. We provide full training and support to get you started.

Having a full driving license and access to a reliable vehicle is preferred to travel between client homes. However, our carers also walk, cycle or use public transport to travel to clients. We offer mileage pay for drivers and Leap card subsidies for public transport users.

The two core modules of the QQI Level 5 Healthcare Support Certificate, Care Skills and Care of the Older Person are mandatory to complete as a Home Carer, however, if you have not completed this training, we can pay for you to complete these modules while you are working.

All Emerald Carers must attend our 20-hour Carer Induction Training which includes both online and in person elements. This includes training in Emerald policies and procedures, practical care skills, safeguarding, patient moving and manual handling and online modules that must be completed on HSELand. In addition to this, the first eight hours of work completed by any Emerald Carer are Buddy Visits in which you shadow an experienced carer in client homes.
